Youth/ Law Enforcement Forums bring youth and officers from the community together to talk about their experiences with each other. These conversations are facilitated by experienced trainers, and provide a safe place for participants to talk honestly and openly about their hopes, fears, and concerns. At the end of the day, youth and officers who participate in the programs will have a better understanding of each other and a foundation for more positive encounters. The forum approach gives young people who may never have had an opportunity to speak to an officer before the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations. Officers who may not live in the community they serve learn about the goals and challenges of young people from the community. These deeper conversations allow both groups to see each other as individuals, not just members of a group, an approach which has been shown to reduce unconscious bias.
